@DanR I’d like to see more of Dawson, maybe not in crunch time. I heard when coach sent Mari in when he took his warm up top off he had forgot to put his jersey on. Think that po’d coach?
-
Kohl is usually pretty good for boards and steals, and Mari for 3’s and throws.
-
Three less treys and one less two and that's the difference.

Reality check time. We have now lost road games to two middle of the pack (or lower) B12 teams, and needed a miracle to beat a middle of the pack team at home. Before today, WVU had just two wins against P5 teams - 7-8 Pitt and a 2 pt home win against 8-7 Cincy. After beating us, UCF promptly lost to Okie State. At this point, it's not clear that we have beaten anyone who is assured of making the tournament. Best win is against 11-5 Tennessee, which got spanked today and is also 1-2 in conference.
It seems now painfully obvious that we simply don't have the talent of the top tier of B12 teams. DP is an NBA talent, but he doesn't make his teammates better, or at least hasn't yet. I don't think there is anyone else who is likely to be drafted, including Flory. It's another mediocre portal haul. White and Council are solid role players and likable guys, but they aren't difference makers. White was a 10ppg scorer with Illinois, and that's really who he is. Council was a 14ppg scorer at St. Bonaventure against lesser competition. Same with Dawson. Tiller has skill and may have upside potential, but he plays soft and disappears. 4 pts in 14 minutes today and 4 fouls. Unfortunately, Jackson is a bust as a 5* recruit.
Good teams simply don't allow middling teams to go on 16-0 / 22-2 runs. The question at this point is whether there is anyone we will beat on the road. If not, we are looking at a losing conference record, 'cause I don't think we will win every game at Allen. A 20 win season may be at risk...

Honestly I don’t think anyone off the bench is good for anything. There’s not even a Connor Teahan on this bench.

It's getting to be a wake up call when you start thinking they are a better team than we are, TCU and WV have that big guy who can push us around and stuff us plus wings who can shoot and guards who can go inside. We can only go to Flory and Tiller with a lob and barely at that. When DP misses that many shots and the defense can sag because we can't hit above a 30% rate it's a long day. Also the coaching in the Big 12 is on to us. I don't know if we can fix our shooting and if we can't then Flory and Tiller will be crowded a lot. This is like three years in a row. Our few recent shooters were only spot up guys and couldn't hoop like Tre and Melvin. Ugh.
-
Well then, that game flipped in the blink of an eye. We were up by like 8 points and BAM, it went downhill fast.
I think we have two major issues in recent games:
1: DEFENSE. The switching is slow and confused. It's not working. The guys are late to switch. It's leading to missed assignments, open lanes to drive, and wide open shooters. Self has to fix this. It's either on him or the players for not committing or understanding what it takes to play this way. We just gave up 86 points to a WVU team that shouldn't come close to that vs a decent team.
2: BIGS: They've disappeared. We have ZERO, ZILCH, NADA post game. Flory and Tiller ... how many times have you seen a post pass to either recently? Somehow Flory ends up with reasonable scoring stats every game, but there's not much emphasis to get either big involved down low.
We should not take a beat down like that to WVU. In the back of my head i keep thinking that like the Chiefs, the dream run is over.

During the 22-2 run if we would have shot 100% 11/11 (if they were all two point attempts) we would have only broken even. They shut us down and we did not return the favor. Tiller was already on the bench and Flory picked his third right at the beginning of the blitz and they abused Mbiya.

I want MORE Mbiya!!! Ha.
Just have him plant his butt in the post and toss him the ball every possession. that would be fun to watch for a while. Can't be worse, right?

@rockchalkjayhawk I seriously would play him more going forward with his size. Tiller will be great just will take 2 or 3 years to get there. If only hunt had one more year, he’d great with this bunch. I think Bill thought Flory would better than what he is, which is very scrawny and under sized.

I haven’t decided what it is with Tiller. He definitely needs more time in the oven. He can be smooth, too. Is it effort with him? (Other than the defensive lapses)

We had a 8 point lead when Darryn went to the bench and then we just let them post up Jamari and Elmarko on like 4 straight possessions. What happened to my coach man?

️ Game Chat Sat. 1/10 11:00CT:Yeah i dont know. I think a little more Mari and a little less Marko could have helped.
our on ball defense was pathetic for large stretches. Kudos to WV exploiting it. Just, so many holes in this game.
Marko is becoming the next Self love fest player that never does anything wrong and will not get pulled outta of the game no matter what. Tuesday he played great defense and turned the tide no question. But he has been terrible 99% of the time this season. The biggest pieces moving forward maybe Flory, Tiller and Dawson. Those guys are complete wild cards most games. Everyone else we got a good idea of what we will get on the average night.

Add this from CBSSports:
But after dropping to 11-5 overall, it's hard to keep Kansas in the top shelf of the Big 12 behemoths, largely because its best player is still not 100% and this defense has been shredded by UCF, TCU and now West Virginia. WVU's offense posted a sizzling 1.28 points per possession, easily the best it's ever managed against a high-major team this season.
Pittsburgh: 1.12 points per possession Clemson: 1.01 Xavier: 1.00 Wake Forest: 1.08 Ohio State: 1.06 Iowa State: 0.97 Cincinnati: 0.97 Kansas: 1.29It's not as if Kansas has bad defensive personnel, either. Melvin Council is an excellent point-of-attack defender. Tre White and Peterson have excellent positional size on the perimeter. Flory Bidunga is a fearsome rim protector, and Bryson Tiller is big and rangy. But Kansas' connection on the defensive end is sputtering. A sign of a locked-in defense is its ability to limit 3-point attempts for the best shooter on the scouting report. Kansas had no answer for Huff (4-11 from downtown), and that came four days after TCU's Liutauras Lelevicius drilled five triples himself.
WVU is, charitably, not a good offensive team and we gave up 46 points in the 2nd half and 1.29 points per possession for the game. Stunning...
Compare to the the (now) top tier B12 teams: Houston has won 16 straight road games - crushed Baylor in Waco today. Arizona easily beat TCU in Ft. Worth. TTU up by 21 early in the 2nd half on the road against Colorado. ISU moved to 3-0.
Recruiting or scheme/coaching???
-
@DCHawker to me it starts with the scheme we have been switching 5 now since I believe since 21. It worked out in 2022 mainly because of personal. It hasn’t worked but 1 time in 5 years. In 22 we basically started 4 guards and big Dave. Dave was a great ball screen defender as a senior. I honestly think we give up 50 points a game off of two things. First a big gets on a guard, they easily beat them off the dribble for a layup. Secondly a guard gets switched on a big and post them up for easy points against a guy that’s half their size in the post. To me it is a lazy ass way to play defense for guys that aren’t skilled enough to keep guys in front of them or just plain laziness.
-
@crimsonblu22 Thanks, that and the Bears win helped ease the sting of the Jayhawk season going down the tubes.
-
@wissox83 yeah… just really disheartening. After losses like that, I have to remind myself to take the season 1 game at a time. Let it breathe.
