We can run and out athlete anyone when we play small. Ball moves way better. Lane is clears out for drives.
Mbiya and Reeves just aren’t athletic enough. When TKR is finally playing they won’t get any run.
But our small ball lineup is getting destroyed by Duke's bigs. They are taking full advantage of switches. Also getting offensive boards and tip-ins.
We’ll get better at it. I think we’ve been practicing a lot with a big man in the lineup.

Stokes was our offense and should have 33 - 35 points

I'm pretty hopeful for the team after this one. Looked like a group figuring out how to play together still. And we have yet to see TKR.
ETA: Also Duke is extremely good.

@DanR Oh well, we're a football school!

Same. Duke is a lot closer to a finished product than we are.

This team has the pieces, the team looked better without Tre and Melvin on the floor because those two haven't played with the rest of the team as much yet. That will improve as they play more games. Same thing with TKR. I fully expect some rough games early on as the team works on their chemistry, but I'm excited about the ceiling of this team and as long as the courts and injuries don't strike this group down, KU will look like a legit national title contender by February.

@DCHawker If this game counted I would be upset that we didn't play Reeves more. He is the only way we could contain Ngogba. As is, it was a good time to try a small ball experiment.

@Jayhawk_69 Fine with trying small ball - which may be the best lineup against teams without bigs that can score and dominate the post - but odd that we stayed with it most of the game. Not sure what the lesson was in having Ngongba dominate down low most of the game? Clearly needed a big body on him. And why, why do we continue to switch to end up with Kinney or a guard having to defend a footer in the paint?????

Tyran Stokes Highlights vs. Duke

It's almost a thing we do repeatedly. Last year it was Trey guarding a big boy and it hurt us but this year saw Melvin, successfully, fronting with those long arms waving while Trey locked up the big as much as he could. That happened only once that I remember. Kinney was on duty a few times and was so active he successfully disrupted it a couple of times. Teams practice for it and it's so obvious. We hung with Duke much better than Tennessee did but Ngongba proved his hype was real. Our switching defense becomes an opportunity to be exploited and really works well for teams that exhibit spacing. Self knows it's coming and is coaching against it but it killed us with a very skilled Ngongba going off. He got almost 30 points. Duke responded to our successes with their own three pointers several times. We didn't complete plays and missed several consecutive chippies by Stokes, Dawes and Kinney and we blew the game at the end just like against Louisville. Another year of stalling late and offering up a mid 70 point offense no no please.
