Seeing all the draft picks from Ohio State makes a guy wonder how bad of a coach Ryan Day is. I know he won a title a few years ago but man they seem to have a lot for talent for not even winning their conference.

Chiefs planned for 4 weeks how to get Delane. They did all types of simulations and nothing gave them any assurance New Orleans, which also lost 2 CBs, wouldn't take him. They traded 1st rd picks and gave up a 3rd and 5th. In 2022, they gave up a 3rd and 4th to get McDuffie. Literally every sportswriter grading the pick thought it was a great move. Number 1 CBs don't fall into your lap often.

@rockchalkjayhawk said in Chiefs offseason thread:

Peter Woods is interesting. He was all the rage the year before apparently. Some ranked him the #1 DL prospect.

I guess we should be happy with the #1 rated CB in the draft in Delane, but was a circuitous route to get him.

          Study time!

I will say this, it’s not a strong draft class but yes the chiefs potentially got the best DL and CB prospect in the draft. We just won’t know until we know

            Chiefs draft haul:

Mansoor Delane: Touted as the best cornerback in the draft. Locked down opponents and not penalized once last year.

Peter Woods: Great measureables and arguably the best DT in the draft. Can stuff the run, rush the QB and lineup both inside and out. Some concerns about his production dropping throughout his college career but some argue that was because of Clemson's gap scheme and being double-teamed often.

R Mason Thomas: Pure speed rusher at DE. Not a good run defender. Arguably the second best pass rusher in the draft.

Jadon Canady: Extremely versatile DB. Can play any position in the secondary.

Emmett Johnson: Did not test well at the combine but was an elite college runningback. All-AMerican who can run, catch, block, find the endzone, and protect the football.

Cyrus Allen: Undersized WR who had a smidge under 700 rec yards but a Big 12 leading 13 touchdowns last season. Speedy and known as a good route runner.

Garrett Nussmeier: A talented QB but has a lot to learn. Probably drafted to back up Fields early in the season if Mahomes is still injured. Might become primary backup after Fields leaves.

What do we make of our draft class? I personally like it quite a bit.

Only pick I didn't like was the short WR. Andy definitely has a type..

We should have drafted a kicker in round 7. It would have given us a dirt cheap upgrade over Butker. I suppose our front office is using the sunken cost fallacy to justify not replacing him.

Cruz goes pick 179 and Henderson gets drafted 199th overall by the Seahawks. Believe those were the only two hawks drafted several have signed UFA deals including JD to the Bucs.

Signed WR Jeff Caldwell from Cincinnati as UFA. He was the 145th ranked player overall on ESPN. Big guy, 6'5" and 216 lbs. Writeup predraft:

Caldwell tested off the charts at the combine, including a 4.31-second 40-yard dash. He spent just one season at the FBS level after transferring from Lindenwood, so he's still inexperienced against good competition. Caldwell presents a large target for the quarterback and flashes the ability to make difficult catches, but he was credited with three drops this past season. He has good feet and surprising quickness for a player with his length. Caldwell's combination of size and speed creates matchup problems for defensive backs that can lead to big plays or penalties. He is still a raw route runner who will need to continue developing his technique and expanding his route tree. -- Scouts Inc.

Edit: Seems like a possible project for TE if he adds 20-25 lbs of muscle?

The chiefs having used their first 4 and most important picks of the draft on defense is somewhat worrisome to me. They are basically putting all the chips on offense to EBs return and Walker getting the run game above average. I still don’t like our receiver ing corps much at all. You don’t have a true number 1 or a guy defenses have to game plan around. Caldwell looks like a great pick up on paper but after hearing about how great Royals was last season during camp to never see the field I won’t trust anything til I see someone showing up on game days.

@kjayhawks2.0 JD was one of several undrafted players to sign 3 year contracts that actually provide more guaranteed money than many drafted players (6th/7th rds) will get. $272,500 for 3. Not much compared to getting a nice draft slot, but NIL doesn't last forever. If they make a team and stay active, players get at least the league min of a lot more (> $800,000 per year, I believe).
