Where we go from here

  • Saturdays loss to Texas wasn’t much of a surprise in the grand scheme of things. But a big question mark that looms imo on what to do moving forward at the QB position. Jalen Daniels aggravated his back injury during a walk thru at the team hotel and it obviously made a difference in todays game. But man was Jason Bean nearly unwatchable today. The 6th year senior made several plays in the running game that had every Jayhawk fan and the announcers wondering what the hell he was doing. He looked like he was scared to get hit multiple times and another time ran wildly swinging the ball in one hand leading to a fumble that Hishaw luckily recovered for 6 points. Honestly watching KU football since the 90s if Texas recovers that fumble and he doesn’t hit a wide open Wilson for a 58 yard touchdown, that could be the worst QB performance I’ve seen since the Terry Allen days and even with making those two plays it was worst in recent memory. 9/21 136 yards with a QBR of 16.5 was his stat line. I guess my question is if JD can’t be on the field, is it Ben Easter’s time? Am I’m overthinking a bad game by Bean when his mindset was holding a clipboard? I’ll give some credit to the defense because they played their game of bending and not breaking to perfection for almost 3 quarters before running out of gas (Texas’s time of possession and number of plays were both over double of KUs). I think some of the heat can go on Coach K in Bean’s defense. The game changed late in the 3rd when we decided to go for a 4th and 10 inches. I was fine with going for it, we are underdogs on the road. But the play call was atrocious. Why the hell do we not do a QB sneak or a play action pass in that position. Texas had 10 guys in the box, either line up under center and push Bean like the eagles do on Sunday or pass the dang pass ball. I think next week is a must win. Just frustrating performance by the offense today.

  • Yeah, I think you’re overthinking it. Bean didn’t know he was going (and therefore didn’t have any practice reps with the 1’s) until right before kick. There’s no harder spot for a QB to be put in than that.

I agree on the 4th and 1 call and the 3rd down run. Kotelnicki got too cute there running a read option (they clearly don’t have many reps with that mesh) and Bean just bailed on a convertible play.

But Easters is like… really bad. Ballard and even Pauley on some days are better.

  • Looked like a big comedy of errors today.

Texas is a quality team of course, but we could have cleaned up our act a bit.

  • Without Daniels, does the team win 2+ more?

  • @Gorilla72 yes. We forget he led the Big 12 in passer rating last year.

  • Looks like I picked a good game to miss. I wondered why the score was so lopsided. I wonder what’s really going on with Daniels? “Back tightness” can be fixed pretty quickly with a good chiropractor and/or masseuse. Hope we don’t tank the next several games like last year.

The game was actually close until the 4th quarter and kept it a one score game until late 3rd quarter. But, KU’s offense couldn’t sustain any drives and the defense just got exhausted from being doubled up on time of possession more than doubled up on plays run.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Thanks!

  • Am I the only one that finds it a bit suspicious that this all happened? Jalon is a 21 year old D1 athlete in peak physical condition…and he tweaked his back going through walk-throughs at the hotel? And Lance Leipold didn’t know about it until 20 minutes before kick? And then Jalon didn’t even go to the sideline to cheer his team on?

  • Well, the UCF Knights roll into Lawrence fresh off a big lead most of the game/loss to Baylor. I had to look up the school in Orlando. That could be a fun away game to attend if Disney World still exists next year. The Atlantic is about a 30 minute drive from campus. Sounds like a more fun away game than Manhattan or Stillwater. I consider this game a must win for us on Saturday.

  • @stoptheflop yes this is a must win if we want to go bowling. @Gorilla72 i think 2 more wins is the max without JD, with JD 7 or 8 is possible. Bean still is thinking way too much instead of doing for a guy with his experience at this level. Believe yesterday was his 22nd start here. @FarmerJayhawk thanks for you input talking me off a ledge lol

  • @MoonwalkMafia it’s weird how it can happen. I’m obviously not an athlete of Jalon’s caliber but I take care of myself. I’ve tweaked mine getting out of my office chair lol

It all went south after a flubbed handoff attempt for a turnover.
