Morris Dismissed

  • Officially charged with Rape.

    Officially off the team.

    Sad situation from many angles.

  • Police report filed. Arrested, I believe.

  • I feel like this was handled about as well as possible by Self. Self wanted to give a talented player a second chance which I have no issue with. Morris couldn’t meet the expectations of Self and was suspended once an accusation was made, then removed from the program once the investigation proceeded far enough that it was determined there was enough evidence Morris likely did something wrong.

Sometimes when you take a gamble, you’re gonna lose, but I hope Self and staff will still give kids second chances in the future.

  • Well, there ya go. Moving past the criminal element for a second…this dismissal hurts our basketball team. I wonder if Self has a last minute addition hiding in the wings? Need some depth at guard!

And back to criminal activity (or not), I found this paragraph kinda scary about Morris’ lawyer. We’ve had some issues over the years. Wonder how other programs stack up?

Chahine has previously represented a variety of KU athletes in criminal cases, including basketball players Carlton Bragg, Silvio De Sousa, Josh Jackson and Jalen Wilson and football player Pooka Williams, as the Journal-World reported.

  • I disagree wholeheartedly that this was handled by Bill and KU well. To each their own opinion though.

He was brought into the school and into basketball program before his previous case had resolved. A day after everyone got lucky the case was dropped, he was suspended from the program for the Rape Allegation and is now charged with such.

There is no way you can convince me this was handled correctly. Try explaining to the victim and the family that any of this is okay.

Good grief, I hope he doesn’t. I’m all for giving guys who really grew up in challenging environments a first chance, but the top coach and program in the country doesn’t need to be a rehabilitation center for players with domestic violence/sexual assault records.

Texas Hawk 10 isn’t suggesting that the act Morris committed is okay, just that the way Bill handled the ordeal was handled about as good as you could given the circumstances. Do you really think Bill/KU are “okay” with any of this? Come on. We can all continue this tired debate on whether Bill should have or should not have given Morris a second chance, but this was Morris’s action and his alone. Horrible situation all around and my heart goes out to the victim. Thank goodness he is gone.

Quick Edit: The script could also have flipped to where Morris gets his head straight and learns how to be a better man under the staff here. It unfortunately didn’t go that way, but Morris only has himself to blame for that.

  • No, Bill Self recruited a known predator to campus. And he should be scrutinized as having done so. How he handles the situation is irrelevant, he created the situation in the first place.

Take the inevitable settlement check out of Bill’s salary.

That’s not going to happen, nor should it, but hey bang on that righteous drum all day my man.

  • @PharmacyHawk What is so righteous about the stance? We are acting as if Morris had gone 10 years without any issues and this 2nd chance was well-deserved.

His first case JUST settled. This entire thing was slimy and greasy AF. The fact that the decision came down to DePaul (who has a total greaseball staff rn) and KU says a lot about KU.

I said this all the way back in July that if Bill is willing to take him on Bill should be willing to bet his job that he won’t do anything wrong while here. That is how sure he should have been that Morris was a changed man.

Bill will face literally no consequences for having recruited a rapist to campus and I’m supposed to just shrug my shoulders? Do you really not think Bill deserves ANY criticism for this?

Hey man if you want to condemn the coaching staff and Bill go for it, you can do whatever you’d like, I really don’t care. It isn’t gonna change a thing for me and my support for this program.

Look through my history, I said in April I didn’t like it, but I trusted the staffs judgement. My stance on their judgement hasn’t changed because there is simply too much information I do not know and nothing from past decisions changes my mind. Morris had an incident with sexual assault, which I honestly skimmed through, but it sounded like a lot of immaturity at the time - NOTHING that read as omg rapist.

And yeah, I don’t think he deserves any criticism. I imagine the guy is probably pretty damn upset with himself and the whole situation. You can shrug your shoulders or not. You do you.

May we please not attack other posters for expressing their opinions on this board. Good grief, KCmatt, you are way off base with the playground comment. That was an unnecessary, insulting and petty comment to one of our members.

Pretty classless man. I think your viewpoints are asinine, but you’re totally within your right to have em’.

  • Alright. This is bullshit. Let’s move on.
