An Awesome Saturday

Obviously the awesomeness is not for Chiefs fans. Ugh

    I’m a Charger fan so…hehe

  • Some see the glass empty.

    Some see it half full.

But some, like the Comet, see it as it is.

    Way to go Comet!!!

  • Did anyone watch the Wizards-Grizzlies game Friday? Seldom started and Chalmers and McLemore came off the bench for Memphis and Markieff started and Oubre came off the bench for Washington; all in all 5 former Jayhawks saw action in one game…awesome. BTW, Washington won by 2…if anyone cares.

  • @KansasComet Ye of the celestial moniker, could the basketball stars have aligned any better? Perhaps bucknell, Bradley , VCU, and No. IA also losing.

  • #1 Michigan State is currently down bye 12 to Ohio State at the half. This CBB season is the equivalent to the 2007 craziness in football at this point.

  • @Fightsongwriter Works for me!!!

  • Michigan State won’t play another Top 20 team until Purdue on 2/10. I look for MSU to recover the top spot soon. This year, Top 10 teams are falling left and tight.

  • @KansasComet This totally proves that Young may get his 30 pts, but OU is still or as vulnerable with him. They can be beat. I’m sorry, I think Young is a great player and would love to have him at KU. But I’m sick of the media hyping him as a one man team. They practically have him winning the NC single-handedly.

  • @truehawk93 It’ll make it that much more fun beating OU this year!

  • @Gorilla72 Yeah…and they have Tom Izzo. We all know Izzo squads are always ready as they roll into March.

  • @dylans I hope.

  • @truehawk93 D-1 Basketball is definitely a team sport. Every player is not going to have it every single games. Some games shots just aren’t falling. It can happen to even the best of players. For example, Udoka was unstoppable against TCU, with the exception of foul trouble. Lightfoot comes up with 6 blocks, crashes the boards, and even knocks down a three! Stories like that, to me, are what make College Basketball fun. It takes a team to win. I think Young is an exceptional player and fun to watch. I don’t agree with the media comparing him to Curry after a handful of College games. That’s not really fair to him. I wish him the best, just not against us.

  • @Gorilla72 Being the number 1 team in the Nation and playing on CBS is pretty much a loss. How many times has that happened to us?

  • @Fightsongwriter Now that would be the ultimate!

  • I’m rewatching the game, realizing Garrett had a pretty decent outing for us last night. Yeah, he didn’t score much, but he got 6 rebounds, 1 turnover, and was in the flow of the offense. His one FG was a huge one right after TCU got their first lead 71-70 with 5 to go, on a sharp back cut.

  • @approxinfinity And the two big free throws — he hasn’t been shooting well from the line but hit those. When you watch him play, he’s a Self type guy.

  • Garrett did have a nice game. Some key boxouts and being in the right spot at the right time.

Wish his confidence in his shot was there because the scouting report is out on him. He’s open and hesitates to decide what to do and he’s open constantly. These are freshman things he just has to work through.

The remedy to him being forgotten on offense could simply be to run more screen action with him when he gets the ball. Re-watching the game there was some stagnant offense when he got the ball on the perimeter and he was unsure what to do because his man was sagging. I’m sure the coaches will see this as well on tape. It can be corrected.

He’s benefiting from the minutes though as much as anyone. Every road environment, every pressure situation he’s in is helping this young man.

  • @approxinfinity

Pound for pound, or should I say inch for inch? Garret is the best rebounder on the team and arguably the best defender as well. Once his scoring comes along he will be one heck of a player.

  • It is going to get harder and harder for Garrett to get to the rim because teams are sagging well off him from three. Before long, his man is just going to be standing in the paint. He is going to have to take (and make) a couple of threes to at least keep teams honest. They are daring him to shoot, and he doesn’t have the confidence to accept that challenge. Of course, he also hasn’t made a three since before Thanksgiving, so I don’t know that I blame teams for sagging away from him.

  • @justanotherfan

What’s the solution for a sagging defender besides taking and making shots?

  • @BeddieKU23

Either step in and take the shorter jumper or drive to the basket since he has the athleticism and size?

  • @JayHawkFanToo

I was thinking something schematically. Every defense is going to sag on him for the rest of the season unless his shot magically comes around. I saw him try and drive a few times and one ended in a bad shot. I do hope he stays aggressive though as I think he can create good things for this offense.

  • @BeddieKU23

    Lots of cutting and movement.

You can’t let the defender sag and stand stationary. You have to make them move back and forth. You have to make them account for backdoor cuts. You have to make that guy have his head on a swivel rather than just sagging into the paint.

Marcus also has to crash the offensive glass with abandon. Since his man is going to be playing off him, he can get a running start on almost every shot attempt. His goal should be to grab at least one offensive board for every stretch he is in the game at a minimum. If he can do that, it will make it harder to play off him because you have to account for him when the shots go up, and its exceptionally tough to run out and box a guy as he’s running in to compete for a rebound.

Finally, Marcus has to get something in transition every game. His goal should be one transition bucket, one offensive rebound putback, and one bucket off a cut. That at least keeps the defense honest without him having to make jumpshots. If he can throw in 2 or 3 more offensive rebounds and one more transition opportunity, whether he scores or not, he can be a net positive player without making shots, provided he also provides top notch defense against the other team’s best guys.

Unfortunately for Marcus, this means he’s going to play 20 of the most high energy minutes you can imagine. On defense, he has to be an absolute stalwart. On offense, he has to be in constant motion, because he has no gravity if he’s just stationed out beyond the three point line. Oh, and he has to do all of this while staying within the scheme, both offensively and defensively.

  • @justanotherfan

Sounds great in theory. I would love to see some of this incorporated.

Where Garrett is getting the ball he’s basically on an island on the perimeter. He gets the ball, man sagged and he’s like “okay what do I do now”. I can’t imagine the staff sees film of this and thinks this is successful offense…

  • @BeddieKU23

Garrett has to act like he’s going to come to the top in KU’s regular offense, then go back door. He won’t be open most of the time, but once or twice a game, it will be there. He has to screen off ball, then cut hard to the rim. He has to cut to score every time just so his man has to play him. If his man is sagging lazily, Garrett gets a layup. If he is playing good defense, the other team doesn’t have the luxury of 4 on 5 basketball.

I don’t know enough about KU’s underlying schemes to know all of the options on different plays, but Garrett has to look at those options and know when he can cut to the rim, and where shots are coming from so he can exploit offensive rebound opportunities.

  • @justanotherfan he had a perfect backdoor cut off the double team!
